Michael Jacobs - Oedipus Is Alive!

Date: Saturday 25th November

The Oedipus complex is not just a key element of psychoanalytic theory – it has entered the language of pop psychology. But if we go back to the play Oedipus the King, is Freud’s view the best way of understanding it? And just how much is the true Oedipus complex still seen as a useful theory in psychodynamic therapy and counselling?

During the day Professor Michael Jacobs will first of all explain the background to the play, show an edited version of it, and invite participants to make their own interpretations of it. He will look at the way Freud chose to interpret the play and ask why he changed his original idea, challenge the way Freud’s original hypothesis has been changed, and look at ways in which the triangular situations of which the complex is a symbol are still a key part of psychodynamic understanding of relationships.

Michael was for many years director of the counselling and psychotherapy programme at the University of Leicester. He is the author of The Presenting Past and Psychodynamic Counselling in Action and author or editor of nearly 60 other books. His professional autobiography is due out in January 2018.
