The Coalition for Inclusion and Anti-Oppressive Practice brings together organisations with a shared mission to improve diversity within the counselling, psychotherapy and psychological therapy professions.

Coalition joint statement: Its current focus is promoting inclusive and anti-oppressive professional training as part of a greater vision to address further barriers to inclusive practice, particularly in relation to supporting racially and ethnically minoritised communities.

Following consultation with trainers and training providers in February 2021, the Coalition partners have agreed to commission and deploy an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Toolkit for Counselling and Psychotherapy programmes.

This will support the development of skills, knowledge and understanding for delivering inclusive counselling and psychotherapy training across a range of learning organisations. With an initial focus on race and ethnicity, the primary objectives of the toolkit will be to provide support on three areas of course provision: the institution; the training programme; and the individual tutor (launching in 2023).

The toolkit is currently being drafted by Marcelline Menyié and Danielle Osajivbe-Williams.

WORKING WITH INTERCULTURAL COUPLES AND/OR POLYAMOUROUS RELATIONSHIPS

Call for therapists who have experience of working with intercultural couples and/or polyamorous romantic relationships to participate in a research study.

In my doctoral dissertation, I am interested in exploring therapists’ experiences of working with intercultural coupes and/or polyamorous romantic relationships. I am looking for therapists who have experience of working with intercultural relationships to participate in a single online interview that will take approximately half an hour. WORKING WITH BEREAVED CLIENTS

An exploration of counsellors working with bereaved clients who have a sensory
experience of the deceased (SED): A Qualitative Study

Aim
The aim of this research is to gain insight into the experience of counsellors working with bereaved clients who experience a sense of presence of the deceased person (SED), whether this is seeing or hearing them or feeling their presence in some other way.

It is hoped that this will contribute to psychoeducation and awareness around this subject, so trainees and therapists have access to more information about working with anomalous experiences in counselling, specifically SED, to enable them to respond more effectively to clients’ needs and reduce stigmatisation.

This research is being conducted as part of my MSc in Counselling at the University of Northampton and has been approved by the Psychology Ethics Committee at the University of Northampton.

Participants
I would like to hear from you if you have worked, as a counsellor or psychotherapist, with
bereaved clients who experience a sense of presence of the deceased and:
- Are a trained counsellor who has been working with clients for over 5 years
- Are a member of a counselling regulatory body such as BACP, UKCP or similar
- Were working for over 6 sessions with bereaved clients that experienced a presence of the deceased person

Location
Your participation will involve taking part in a confidential, recorded, semi-structured interview with the researcher lasting approximately 60-90 minutes via the University of Northampton’s online, secure Collaborate rooms.

Religion and Spirituality Research Survey Invite

Research title: Religion and spirituality in therapy: exploring how trainee and newly qualified counsellors and psychotherapists, who identify as religious or spiritual, experience undertaking therapeutic training in the UK.

My name is Dr. Jane Hunt and I am an experienced therapist, trainer and academic and am currently the Academic Director in Faculty One at Metanoia Institute. I am conducting research into how trainee and newly qualified counsellors and psychotherapists, who identify as religious or spiritual, experience undertaking therapeutic training in the UK.

To take part in this survey you would need to identify as someone who is religious, spiritual, or a person of faith. You do not need to be a member of a particular religious or faith group. However, you do need to be a current trainee or recent professional counsellor or psychotherapy graduate with no more than five years post qualifying experience. You also need to be on or have graduated from a training course accredited or endorsed by one of the following professional bodies: BACP, UKCP, or BPC and have undertaken a training programme that is at least one year full-time in length or two years part-time which included a minimum of a 100 hours of counselling or psychotherapy with clients.

The survey will ask you to answer questions in four main areas: your experience of talking about religion/spirituality during your training; any conflicts you experience between your religion/spirituality and therapeutic theory and practice; the extent of training you have received around religion and spirituality on your training programme; and how equipped you feel to work with clients presenting with religious/spiritual concerns.

This is a great opportunity for practitioners from a variety of professional backgrounds (counselling/ psychotherapy and Mental Health specialists) who are confident in providing ethical, high quality, accessible and appropriate short-term face to face and online therapeutic support to students. You will work within the multi-disciplinary Student Wellbeing team made up of highly qualified and experienced Counsellors and Psychological Practitioners.

We are looking for a suitably qualified practitioner who is either accredited or working towards accreditation with a recognised professional membership body/ organisation e.g. BACP, NCS, BPS, BABCP, HCPC, SWE, NMC.
You will work as part of a group of sessional Practitioners on an as-needs basis for set periods of time throughout the year (usually, but not exclusively term-time). The Student Wellbeing Service is keen to support flexible working where possible, with a range of working days, times, and patterns available.

We offer competitive rates of pay, paid clinical supervision contributions, access to CPD opportunities, and you will have the opportunity to work with students and staff in a supportive team and institution.

ADHD Women research project

The project seeks to contribute intersectional, critical and ADHD-affirmative knowledge to the existing gap in knowledge about ADHD women. In doing so, it moves away from 'medical model of ADHD' that dominates what we know about ADHD and ADHD women. It centres ADHD women’s own voices – I am also an ADHD woman.

This is an invite for ADHD women in England (UK) to take part in the survey. The survey consists of background questions and six open questions. (After that, there is the option to be approached for phase 2.) The survey is open till 14 Oct 2022 (click here to go to the survey directly).

ADHD women who can participate need to be at least 20yo, live in England (UK), and have 24 months of experience living as an ADHD woman. They also need to fit one of two criteria:

They have received their diagnosis 24 months before filling in the survey through the NHS or privately via Right to Choose
They currently receive ADHD medication through the NHS (including privately via a ‘shared care agreement’).

A special invite to black, brown and roma ADHD women; working class ADHD women; ADHD women of faith; lesbian, bi and queer ADHD women; trans and non-binary ADHD women; and ADHD women who are also otherwise disabled.

RESEARCH PARTICIPANT REQUESTS

ADHD Women research project

The project seeks to contribute intersectional, critical and ADHD-affirmative knowledge to the existing gap in knowledge about ADHD women. In doing so, it moves away from 'medical model of ADHD' that dominates what we know about ADHD and ADHD women. It centres ADHD women’s own voices – I am also an ADHD woman.

This is an invite for ADHD women in England (UK) to take part in the survey. The survey consists of background questions and six open questions. (After that, there is the option to be approached for phase 2.) The survey is open till 14 Oct 2022(click here to go to the survey directly).

ADHD women who can participate need to be at least 20yo, live in England (UK), and have 24 months of experience living as an ADHD woman. They also need to fit one of two criteria:

They have received their diagnosis 24 months before filling in the survey through the NHS or privately via Right to Choose
They currently receive ADHD medication through the NHS (including privately via a ‘shared care agreement’).

A KINDNESS REMINDER FOR MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK

In the name of Allah, the most Merciful, always Merciful.

This week is the last one in Ramadan, the month of forgiveness and mercy, and it also coincides with Mental Health Awareness Week.

The theme for the week is 'kindness'. We thought we would remind all of us with some of the guidance from the Quran and Sunnah regarding mercy.

During these challenging times, more than ever we are in need to practice the values of kindness and compassion as individuals, families, communities and the wider society.

Allah the Exalted said:

إِنَّ اللَّهَ بِالنَّاسِ لَرَءُوفٌ رَّحِيمٌ

Verily, Allah is kind and merciful to the people. (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:143)

And Allah said:

لَقَدْ جَاءَكُمْ رَسُولٌ مِّنْ أَنفُسِكُمْ عَزِيزٌ عَلَيْهِ مَا عَنِتُّمْ حَرِيصٌ عَلَيْكُم بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ رَءُوفٌ رَّحِيمٌ

There has certainly come to you a Messenger from among yourselves. Grievous to him is what you suffer, for he is concerned over you and to the believers he is kind and merciful. (Surah At-Tawbah 9:128)

And Allah said:

ثُمَّ قَفَّيْنَا عَلَىٰ آثَارِهِم بِرُسُلِنَا وَقَفَّيْنَا بِعِيسَى ابْنِ مَرْيَمَ وَآتَيْنَاهُ الْإِنجِيلَ وَجَعَلْنَا فِي قُلُوبِ الَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوهُ رَأْفَةً وَرَحْمَةً

Then We sent Our messengers in their footsteps and followed them with Jesus, the son of Mary, and gave him the Gospel. We placed in the hearts of those who followed him kindness and mercy. (Surah Al-Hadeed 57:27)

And Allah said:

فَقُولَا لَهُ قَوْلًا لَّيِّنًا لَّعَلَّهُ يَتَذَكَّرُ أَوْ يَخْشَىٰ

Speak to to Pharaoh mildly that perhaps he may be reminded or fear Allah. (Surah TaHa 20:44)

And Allah said:

فَوَيْلٌ لِّلْمُصَلِّينَ الَّذِينَ هُمْ عَن صَلَاتِهِمْ سَاهُونَ الَّذِينَ هُمْ يُرَاءُونَ وَيَمْنَعُونَ الْمَاعُونَ

Woe to those who pray, who are heedless of their prayer, who pray to be seen and withhold small acts of kindness. (Surah Al-Ma’un 107:4-7)

Aisha reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

يَا عَائِشَةُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ رَفِيقٌ يُحِبُّ الرِّفْقَ فِي الْأَمْرِ كُلِّهِ

O Aisha, Allah is kind and He loves kindness in all matters. (Sahih: Bukhari)

Aisha reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

يَا عَائِشَةُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ رَفِيقٌ يُحِبُّ الرِّفْقَ وَيُعْطِي عَلَى الرِّفْقِ مَا لَا يُعْطِي عَلَى الْعُنْفِ وَمَا لَا يُعْطِي عَلَى مَا سِوَاهُ

O Aisha, Allah is gentle and He loves gentleness, and He rewards for gentleness what is not granted for harshness, and He does not reward anything else like it. (Sahih: Muslim)

Aisha reported: I was upon a camel which was misbehaving so I began to strike it, then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

عَلَيْكِ بِالرِّفْقِ فَإِنَّ الرِّفْقَ لَا يَكُونُ فِي شَيْءٍ إِلَّا زَانَهُ وَلَا يُنْزَعُ مِنْ شَيْءٍ إِلَّا شَانَهُ

You must be gentle. Verily, gentleness is not in anything except that it beautifies it, and it is not removed from anything except that it disgraces it. (Sahih: Musnad Ahmad)

Aisha reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

إِذَا أَرَادَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ بِأَهْلِ بَيْتٍ خَيْرًا أَدْخَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ الرِّفْقَ

If Allah the Exalted intends goodness for a household, He lets gentleness come over them. (Sahih; Musnad Ahmad)

Jareer reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

مَنْ يُحْرَمْ الرِّفْقَ يُحْرَمْ الْخَيْرَ

He who is deprived of kindness is deprived of goodness. (Sahih: Muslim)

Abu Ad-Darda reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

مَنْ أُعْطِيَ حَظَّهُ مِنْ الرِّفْقِ فَقَدْ أُعْطِيَ حَظَّهُ مِنْ الْخَيْرِ وَمَنْ حُرِمَ حَظَّهُ مِنْ الرِّفْقِ فَقَدْ حُرِمَ حَظَّهُ مِنْ الْخَيْرِ

Whoever is given his portion of kindness has been given his portion of goodness, and whoever is deprived of his portion of kindness has been deprived of his portion of goodness. (Sahih: Sunan At-Tirmidhi)

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

الْمُؤْمِنُ مُؤْلَفٌ وَلَا خَيْرَ فِيمَنْ لَا يَأْلَفُ وَلَا يُؤْلَفُ

The believer is gracious, for there is no goodness in one who is neither kind nor friendly. (Sahih: Musnad Ahmad)

Anas ibn Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Harshness is not found in anything except that it disgraces it. Verily, Allah is kind and He loves kindness. (Hasan: Al-Adab Al-Mufrad)

Ibn Mas’ud reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِمَنْ يَحْرُمُ عَلَى النَّارِ أَوْ بِمَنْ تَحْرُمُ عَلَيْهِ النَّارُ عَلَى كُلِّ قَرِيبٍ هَيِّنٍ سَهْلٍ

Shall I not tell you for whom the Hellfire is forbidden? It is every person accessible, polite, and mild. (Hasan: Sunan At-Tirmidhi)

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

رَأْسُ الْعَقْلِ بَعْدَ الْإِيمَانِ بِاللَّهِ التَّوَدُّدُ إِلَى النَّاسِ

The basis of reasoning, after faith in Allah, is loving kindness toward the people. (Hasan: Al-Mu’jam Al-Awsat)

Jubair reported:

وَقَدْ سَمَّاهُ اللَّهُ رَءُوفًا رَحِيمًا

Allah has named the Prophet as kind and merciful. (Sahih: Muslim)

Abu Sulaiman reported:

وَكَانَ رَفِيقًا رَحِيمًا

The Prophet was kind-hearted and merciful. (Sahih: Bukhari)

“There is nothing more beneficial for the heart than treating people well and wanting good for them. If you do this, you will gain the love and affection of strangers; you will maintain the companionship and love of friends; and your kindness will extinguish the fire of hatred raging in the breast of your enemy…”

“The person who treats others kindly and thinks well of them, will find that his intention will remain true, he will feel at ease, his heart will be sound and Allah will protect him from evil and calamity.”

Imam ibn al Qayyim (rahimahullah) ~ Madarij al-Salikeen 2/511

May Allah SWT maintain us all in His Mercy and Protection. Ameen.

Acts of Kindness - Acts as Kindness

Are you one who finds it easier to be kind to others than you are to your self?

Or do you think that being kind to others means you are kind to yourself?

The act of kindness is three fold; to be truly sincere in your kindness to others is to also be truly kind to yourself and for Muslims this also means acknowledgment of Allah swt kindness upon us all.

The litmus test to assess the level of your kindness in your heart is your response to Allah swt advice.

If you find you are not as kind as you thought, than one of the remedies for a hard heart is given by our beloved Prophet swws when he says;
‘Stroke the head of the orphan and feed the poor’.

Take a moment to consider what this means?

To lay your hand upon the head of another human being who has experienced unimaginable pain and loss. Not just thinking about it, but reaching out and touching another human in pain, how would you feel?

Human touch can remove the barriers of self-deceit and illusion. Being real teaches us kindness.

Are you real about yourself?

‘We have certainly created man in the best of stature’ (Ah-Tin:5)

Allah swt has high praise and confidence in His creation, but we often fail to live up to that standard.

Allah swt is kind to us, why are we not kind to ourselves?

I’m not talking about telling others about how brilliant we are, that’s arrogance.

I’m talking about acts of kindness to self in the best of ways, the practices of Islam.

Allah swt lists acts of kindness in Quran such as charity and saying words of kindness and He also mentions amongst those acts, self actions such as prayer (Surah Bakarah 2:177).

What about fasting? Is that an act of kindness, of course! It is kindness to your body.

What about Hijab, is that an act of kindness? It is when we safeguard our privacy, when we choose to work on the inner self rather than be concerned with displaying the outer to others.

Application of the commands of Allah swt are all acts of kindness to self, they are in essence a purification of the self, which will cultivate a kind heart.

After attending an Islamic seminar on Quran and the self, the speaker in response to someone's inability to pray at that time, he simply replied ‘well, I see you do not love yourself’. They had not considered the acts of prayer as an action of self-kindness and love. They had looked at prayer as a chore and for Allah.

The Quran can help to uncover how much we criticize ourselves (those inner critics are hard to silence!). When we began to realize that acts of worship are acts of kindness then viewing prayer as kindness turned the surrender so much sweeter.

Be kind to yourself; be kind to others as Allah swt is always kind to us, even if we don’t always realise it.

Islamic Acts of Kindness During the Coronavirus Pandemic

Being kind during lockdown

As human beings, it is often easier for some of us to be good, kind and nice to each other when everything is going well; however, the ultimate test of someone's character comes when some of us are tested by hardship, difficulty and change that seemingly threatens our existence, routines and painful experiences that hurt us.

It is in these circumstances during these unprecedented times with the coronavirus pandemic when we are experiencing self-isolation, uncertainty, a great deal of worry and hardship, that the true character and kindness of a person is demonstrated and manifested.

The test of a sound character is truly crystallised when we move beyond the realms of our self-centred needs and put ourselves to be at the service of others especially when we perceive ourselves to be in need or in pain.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was the greatest human being to walk the earth and is the best example for us to follow in practising mercy, compassion and kindness even at times of extreme difficulty and stress.

The Prophet (sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam) has said:

"Whoever relieves a believer's distress of the distressful aspects of this world, Allāh will rescue him from a difficulty of the difficulties of the Hereafter. Whoever alleviates [the situation of] one in dire straits who cannot repay his debt, Allāh will alleviate his lot in both this world and in the Hereafter. Whoever conceals [the faults of] a Muslim, Allāh will conceal [his faults] in this life and the Hereafter." [Muslim]

It is one of the attributes and values of our faith to help our fellow human beings regardless of their faith, background or ethnic origin.

Below are some examples of Islamic acts of kindness that we can do to help others during this pandemic.

Some of these acts of kindness are obvious, and others are often overlooked, but of great importance too and a reminder to us all.

In the Quran, Allāh (SWT) says: "Help one another in acts of piety and righteousness. And do not assist each other in acts of sinfulness and transgression. And be aware of Allāh. Verily, Allāh is Severe in punishment." [Qur’an, 5:2]

1. Be Kind to Others

"O Aisha, Allāh is gentle, and He loves gentleness. He rewards for gentleness what is not granted for harshness and He does not reward anything else like it." [Muslim]

It is important to recognise that in our everyday lives, we will encounter many people, and we are not always aware of what turmoil they may be going through. The simple act of being kind can sometimes be lifechanging to someone.

One of the ways this can be done in the current climate is through engaging in positive conversations and checking in on people via the phone, or even simply smiling and acknowledging someone from afar.

2. Initiate the Salaam

In the current circumstances, do not miss out on spreading the salaam while adhering to the guidelines on social distancing by utilising the phone and technology verbally without shaking hands. It increases love between people, and it reminds us that we are all in need of Allāh's peace and blessings in our lives. Do this with those whom you know and whom you do not know, as long as it is appropriate; there is a great virtue in this.

"You will not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not believe until you love one another. Shall I not tell you about something which, if you do it, you will love one another? Spread salaam amongst yourselves." [Muslim]

3. Make Du'a for Others in Private

At these challenging times, all of us are in need of du'a now, individually and collectively. When you make du'a for someone in private, Allāh sends an angel to you who replies "Ameen and same to you". If you help someone, Allāh helps you. Supplicating for someone is a beautiful way to aide your brother or sister at this difficult time.

4. Enquire About People and Ask Them What They Are Struggling With and Find Ways to Assist Them

In these difficult times, we are aware of people's struggles, and we just need to pick up the phone and ask. There is a wonderful story from the life of Abu Bakr (RA) who would visit a blind elderly woman and take care of her chores and household duties. She was unaware of who he was, and he kept his deeds private, as it was only discovered and relayed by another companion when he witnessed this.

5. Give in Charity
"Protect yourself from hellfire even by giving a piece of date as charity." [Bukhari and Muslim].

One of the pathways to help someone and safeguard yourself and those you love from calamity, illness and hardship is through the noble act of giving charity, by means of Zakat or Sadaqah.

The Prophet (sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam) also said, "We (Muslims) are the last (to come) but will be the foremost on the Day of Resurrection." The narrators of this Hadith said: Allāh said (to man), Spend (in charity), for then I will compensate you (generously)." [Bukhari]

6. Pay for Someone's Groceries

Engage in a random act of kindness that can make a huge difference to a vulnerable or a needy person's life.

7. Seek Forgiveness

It is imperative that we seek forgiveness as a means of purification, asking Allāh (SWT) that the cloud of this virus is lifted and a greater chance of our deeds being accepted. It is important that we remember that we must help ourselves first while helping others. When we repent, we are cleansed. Repentance acts like a polish for the heart, the same way we polish and shine a mirror, we know when we do this, we make it shinier than when it is left untouched and unattended to.

The above should inspire us to reflect on our Islamic footprint in the world at this unprecedented time and how much we are doing for others for the sake of Allāh. When we serve the creation, we are serving our Creator Allāh (SWT).
May Allāh (SWT) allow us all to be forthcoming in helping others and being leaders in kindness, compassion and empathy. Aameen.
